Lack of transparency and consistency in the process

The process of applying to Access to Work is becoming increasingly frustrating and upsetting for deaf and deafblind people.

The problems we’ve been told about include:

  • people being asked to return money when Access to Work changes a decision;
  • Access to Work speaking directly to employers rather than the deaf or deafblind person, who is their customer;
  • a lack of guidance about what to do when a full time worker can’t be found; and
  • information about the sort of support people might need not being shared within Access to Work.

For deaf and deafblind people and their employers, this means more uncertainty and anxiety. Employing the deaf or deafblind person will be increasingly unattractive if the employer has to get involved with Access to Work themselves.
